Featured Match: Standard Tournament (Sept. 01)

Greetings y'all and welcome to FITSSFF's first posted feature match for the Fall 2012 semester! This is the deciding first-place match for the Standard tournament on September 1. Because this is my first time doing this, I am going to give you a heads' up that I am writing in a slightly different method than you are used to, but hopefully you'll enjoy it in spite of this fact!

That said... away we go!

Featured match: ZOMBACALYPSE!! (Zombies Everywhere!)

Four rounds into the tournament, two Planeswalkers have emerged at the top of the pack, and this final round is promising to be quite interesting indeed, as both contenders push back their sleeves and prepare for the first task of any match - deciding who is going to go first.

With a simple roll of the dice, Lady Luck makes the call, and the Planeswalker Luke and his Denizens of the Dead take the lead in turn play.  His competitor, the Planeswalker Max, sits back to wait with his own Undead Minions for his turn, and the match begins.

Two Planeswalkers face off.  One stands firm, triumphant in his recent exploits against goblins, while the other stands tall, confident in the fact that he has made it here to the final match.  Both are confident, easy, joking and easy going despite the fact that this showdown is the least predictable of all, for both competitors are entering this round with the same strategy in mind: Zombies.  The audience waits with bated breath, eager to see these commanders of the undead go head to head.

The first match is almost a Magic Planeswalker rendition of the musical number “Anything you can do I can do better”, thrown off in its rhythm only by Luke’s explosive vocabulary when Max lays down a Blood Artist.  In spite of this, or perhaps because his colorful language has thrown off his opponent, Luke emerges triumphant, beating Max down with his undead army.

After a brief reassessment of spells, both players enter into the second match more determined than ever to emerge victorious and prove the superiority of their respective undead armies.  Max elects to take the first turn, though he does reshuffle and revert to six spells after seeing his intital hand.  From that point on however, the match is flurry of undead matched by undead, monsters to monsters.  Creatures fly off to the graveyard only to return to the battlefield fast than your faithful recorder can keep track.  In the final face-off, a long lull occurs, as Luke carefully considers his position when Max attacks him with two Gravecrawlers, a Diregraf Ghoul, and a Geralf’s Messenger.  After much pondering, swearing, and math, Luke concedes the match – unable to claim the victory from Max’s superior mathematical attacking power.

And so the round enters into its final match, both players with one victory under their belt and both eager to claim the final victory that will bring them to first place in this showdown of Planeswalkers.  At first, this match seems to be the slowest, as Luke resorts to only six spells, and then opens with nothing more than a Swamp.  However, Max is quick to go on the offensive.  Slow to call his army to him, Luke is soundly defeated by Luke’s onslaught of the undead, and the Planeswalker Max proves himself the true Master of the Undead.

At least for now. (Dun-dun-dun!!)
