Featured Match: Standard Tournament (Sept. 01)

Greetings y'all and welcome to FITSSFF's first posted feature match for the Fall 2012 semester! This is the deciding first-place match for the Standard tournament on September 1. Because this is my first time doing this, I am going to give you a heads' up that I am writing in a slightly different method than you are used to, but hopefully you'll enjoy it in spite of this fact!

That said... away we go!

---

Featured match: ZOMBACALYPSE!! (Zombies Everywhere!)

Four rounds into the tournament, two Planeswalkers have emerged at the top of the pack, and this final round is promising to be quite interesting indeed, as both contenders push back their sleeves and prepare for the first task of any match - deciding who is going to go first.

With a simple roll of the dice, Lady Luck makes the call, and the Planeswalker Luke and his Denizens of the Dead take the lead in turn play.  His competitor, the Planeswalker Max, sits back to wait with his own Undead Minions for his turn, and the match begins.

Two Planeswalkers face off.  One stands firm, triumphant in his recent exploits against goblins, while the other stands tall, confident in the fact that he has made it here to the final match.  Both are confident, easy, joking and easy going despite the fact that this showdown is the least predictable of all, for both competitors are entering this round with the same strategy in mind: Zombies.  The audience waits with bated breath, eager to see these commanders of the undead go head to head.

The first match is almost a Magic Planeswalker rendition of the musical number “Anything you can do I can do better”, thrown off in its rhythm only by Luke’s explosive vocabulary when Max lays down a Blood Artist.  In spite of this, or perhaps because his colorful language has thrown off his opponent, Luke emerges triumphant, beating Max down with his undead army.

After a brief reassessment of spells, both players enter into the second match more determined than ever to emerge victorious and prove the superiority of their respective undead armies.  Max elects to take the first turn, though he does reshuffle and revert to six spells after seeing his intital hand.  From that point on however, the match is flurry of undead matched by undead, monsters to monsters.  Creatures fly off to the graveyard only to return to the battlefield fast than your faithful recorder can keep track.  In the final face-off, a long lull occurs, as Luke carefully considers his position when Max attacks him with two Gravecrawlers, a Diregraf Ghoul, and a Geralf’s Messenger.  After much pondering, swearing, and math, Luke concedes the match – unable to claim the victory from Max’s superior mathematical attacking power.

And so the round enters into its final match, both players with one victory under their belt and both eager to claim the final victory that will bring them to first place in this showdown of Planeswalkers.  At first, this match seems to be the slowest, as Luke resorts to only six spells, and then opens with nothing more than a Swamp.  However, Max is quick to go on the offensive.  Slow to call his army to him, Luke is soundly defeated by Luke’s onslaught of the undead, and the Planeswalker Max proves himself the true Master of the Undead.

At least for now. (Dun-dun-dun!!)

Modern Pauper Update

We've decided to ban Ponder for the Modern Pauper event on Sept. 22, bringing the banlist to:
  • Ponder
  • Cranial Plating
  • Cloudpost
Also, I forgot to mention, you can check out this site for deck ideas.  The decks aren't Modern-legal, so you'll have to invent your own version of them, but they can be a starting point. http://decks.mtgoacademy.com/formats.aspx?format=Pauper

Magic Celebration Recap, Commander, and Modern Pauper

Magic Celebration was a success, and free Magic cards were had by all. (And at least one person got two planeswalkers out of it.)  I'll list the people I saw there at the end of this post; if I missed you, or if you went to a shop other than Dogs of War, let me know so we can give you League Points.

This Saturday will be our first Commander (also knows as EDH) event of the semester.  If you're not familiar with the format, you can find full info here: http://mtgcommander.net/rules.php. The short version is: choose a legendary creature to be your commander and build 100 card deck around it. You're limited to one copy of each card that's not a basic land and you can't have any mana symbols anywhere on your cards that aren't shared by the commander.

If you don't have a deck and aren't able to build one, let us know -- several people have multiple Commander decks and would be happy to share.  It's a really fun and unique format.

As we've done before, we'll have pods of 4-5 people and an achievement sheet to determine winners.  The achievements reward a variety of deck styles and discourage a few seriously unfun things like destroying everyone's lands.  Achievement sheets will be handed out at the event.

I want to post about the week after that as well, since pretty much everyone will have to build a new deck for it.  Fortunately, that will be easy to do, because all you need is commons!  Pauper is a format where commons are the only cards allowed.  We're restricting it to Modern-legal sets so people don't have to track down old and expensive cards.  That means your cards have to be printed as a common in at least one of the following:
  • a core set from 8th Edition or newer; or
  • an expansion set from the original Mirrodin or newer.
You can find a complete list of sets here: http://www.wizards.com/Magic/TCG/Resources.aspx?x=judge/resources/sfrmodern.

The normal Modern banned list does not apply, but the following two cards are banned:
  • Cloudpost
  • Cranial Plating
In addition, cards that were timeshifted in the Time Spiral set (purple expansion symbol) are not allowed unless they were also printed at common in another legal set.  This is to prevent confusion about what counts as common or not.

Here are a few examples. Ask if you have any questions.
  • Oblivion Ring was last printed at uncommon in M13, but since it was common in Lorwyn (among other sets) it is legal.
  • Rancor was printed at common in Urza's Legacy, but since it has only been printed at uncommon in Modern-legal sets, it is not legal.
  • Squire was timeshifted and was a common in The Dark, but is not legal since it wasn't an actual common in a Modern-legal set.

Okay, finally, the list of names in no particular order:
  • Hunter Garrett
  • Andew Hunter
  • Joe K
  • Tyler Deforge
  • James Throne
  • David Wyland
  • Max Kruger
  • Chris Pear
  • Miles Davis
  • Ryan Ripper
  • Jonah Molegrito
  • Sean Davenport
  • Luke Glesner
  • Kyle Coleman
  • Tom Barringer
  • Jared Sork

Standard Recap, Saturday Event Info, and League Points

First of all, if you haven't liked us on Facebook, get on it: www.facebook.com/FITSSFFMagic

Twelve people came out to pit their 60-card Standard constructions against their peers', but in the end it came down to one deck...twice.  Max asserted himself as Necromancer of the Day as his Blue-Black Zombie deck defeated Luke's similar one in the deciding match.

The prize winners were:

1: Max Kruger (UB Zombies)
2: Luke Glesner (UB Zombies)
3: Hunter Garrett (Goblins)
4: Jonah Molegrito (Flayer of the Hatebound Reanimator)

Look forward to feature matches and decklists coming soon.

This weekend you'll get FREE Magic cards just for showing up!  Check out this page for more info: http://www.wizards.com/magic/tcg/events.aspx?x=mtg/event/mcelebration-facts.

Dogs of War is starting the event at noon.  If you need a ride, meet at the SUB at 11:00 and we'll work it out.  If you have a car it would be great if you could come and help transport.

Even though this event is off campus, you'll get League Points for attending: Look out for signup sheets at each of the local game stores.  Sign in and we'll give you credit.

With two events complete, it's time to start looking at the League Point standings.  Remember that the top 8 players will be invited to a special championship tournament at the end of the semester.  Keep playing to earn points!
